The Untapped Advantage that Church Facility Managers Have Access To

I listened to a webinar today where a panel of facility management professionals were sharing their experiences and insights for 2026. The panel was a diverse group consisting of facility managers from hospitals, a university, and even a NFL team.

And here’s what really hit me—facility managers struggle with the same challenges whether they’re working at a church, a public school, a hospital, or a professional sports team.

Regardless of how large the organization was, and how much money they had in their department, everyone felt understaffed and under-resourced. So if you’re working in facilities as a church and feel like you’re being asked to do more than you can with what you’ve been given, you’re not alone.

You’re struggling with the same challenges as other FMs across all industries.

But as I listened to these professionals share their stories and thought about the churches we’ve worked at and spoken to, I realized that you have a unique advantage at the church. There are skilled people who attend your church who would be happy to help you cross some of the tasks of your list.

Build a Volunteer Team

Dustin and I first got started helping with facilities at our local church years ago because we wanted to be able to use our experience to help the church in that area. And when Dustin started building the volunteer team, there were plenty of others who wanted to do the same.

You have people at your church who are willing to help you maintain your building.

This is an advantage that other businesses don’t have. NFL fans want to come and watch a game on Sunday. They don’t want to come and volunteer their time to fix a leaking toilet on Tuesday night after work (well maybe the die-hard fans).

It takes work to build a team of volunteers, but it’s worth spending your time in this area. Not only will volunteers help lighten your load, it also helps you connect with church members, and provides them an opportunity to use their God-given talents to serve.

This is an area that we’re going to be diving into further in the coming months because it’s something I’ve noticed churches of all sizes struggle with. We want to help change that. But in the meantime, dive into the messages we’re already sharing in this area:
